Christopher Jackson

Biography

His voice has been described as “a warm lyric voice with a high extension,” tenor, Christopher Jackson, is a versatile singer with experience ranging from the early music of the Baroque period through to Gospel. Alongside opera, he also throughly enjoys his life as a voice teacher [and coach], professional chorister and recitalist.

He began the 2020-2021 season playing the role of Alfred in Johann Strauss’s highly acclaimed operetta Die Fledermaus (socially-distanced) with the newly formed KJR Studio Productions. He then sang a streamed Christmas Concert as a part of the Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church artists series with members of the Elgin Symphony and Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestras. Following the Christmas season, he began the spring with a live-streamed concert “A Night at the Opera” also with KJR Studio Productions. The spring season finishes with a recital program of opera arias, duets and popular songs with soprano Kathleen Monson and pianist Riko Higuma.

The 2019-2020 season began with concerts as a chorister and key ensemble member with Chicagoland area chamber ensembles. The first with The St. Charles Singers, as a part of their “Mozart Journey 15” [the 15th concert exploring all of the choral works of Mozart] and in a world premiere of chamber version of Jocelyn Hagens’ “The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci” with Heartland Voices of Elgin, IL. Following these performances he collaborated with colleagues at Elgin Community College in a departmental showcase He then performed Faure’s Requiem with the Beloit College Choirs and the Janesville Symphony Orchestra. Following these concerts, Christopher performed a recital of “Arias and Art Songs” as a part of the Artists Series at Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church with pianist Hanbyul Yang. The Christmas season included a performance of Camille Saint-Saëns Oratorio de Noël as a tenor soloist, and choral concerts with Heartland Voice, Electic Choral Artists, and Canterbury Singers of Dixon, IL. In January [2020] he was blessed to make his Chicago Symphony Center debut as a member of the Adrian Dunn Singers in the MLK Tribute Concert with the Chicago Sinfonietta Orchestra.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the remainder of his 2019-2020 season was cancelled.

In the 2018-2019 season, Christopher sang the roles of The Vendor and Gherardo in Puccini’s Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi as well as the Tenor soloist for Bach Cantata #104 Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme all with the Sinfonietta DuPage Orchestra, King Kaspar in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors with the Beloit College choirs and Handel’s The Messiah with the Saints Faith, Hope, Charity Parish choir. He finished the season singing a concert with Chicago based group “Zazz Jazz Combo” as a part of the Sinfonietta Bel Canto Summer concert series featuring ballroom favorites by Porter, Gershwin, Kern and more.

Christopher’s opera credits include Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Henrik Egerman in A Little Night Music, Orpheus in Orpheus and the Underworld, Lord Tolloller in Iolanthe, Nanki-Poo in The Mikado, Cryil in Princess Ida, all being Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas, Basilio and Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro (cover) and Mingo in Porgy and Bess just to name a few. He has also worked as a professional chorister in productions of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience, Donizetti’s L’elisir D’Amore, Handel’s Acis and Galatea and Dido and Aeneas, as well as Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea all and a concert of selections from Princess Ida at the Simpson Garden Park in Bowling Green, OH. Other professional ensemble engagements include the company debut production of Porgy and Bess with Cincinnati Opera in 2012 and in La Traviata, La Boheme, Turandot and Don Giovanni with Toledo Opera and Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Handel’s Messiah at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra.

His solo concert repertoire consists of Bach's Mass in B minor, Magnificat, Mass in D minor, Handel's The Messiah, Mozart's Requiem, Saint-Saëns Oratorio de Noël  and James Whitbourn's The Mystery of Love and Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis.  

As a choral musician, he regularly performers The St.Charles Singers, Eclectic Choral Artists, Heartland Voices, all Chicagoland area ensembles. as a section leader and soloist. He performed 2 seasons (2015-16, 2016-17) as an ensemble member and soloist with Cor Cantiamo which included a recording and release of an album of works by James Whitbourn. His experiences in choral ensembles have taken him to perform at venues such as Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in NYC and national conferences like American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Some of his choral repertoire includes Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, Mozart's Litanae de venerabii altaris Sacramento K125, Misericordias Domini K222 and Regina Coeli K108, Poulenc's Gloria, the world premiere  of the chamber versions of Whitbourn's The Seven Heavens and Jocelyn Hagen’s The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci.

Christopher holds a Master of Music and Performer's Certificate in Voice from Northern Illinois University where he studied under the tutelage of bass Myron Myers. He also holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Bowling Green State University where he studied with tenor Christopher Scholl.
